Been thinking, something I rarely do...

Last night I opened this dusty sketchbook from my college years and was appalled by the sheer numbers of mistakes the drawings had--in anatomy, perspective, lighting, you name it, it's there. But mistakes aren't there to be our cliff, our detour, our road-end... it's there to be our milestones, our margins, our breadcrumbs; something we use to find the way home into ourselves. The more we open our eyes, hearts, and minds to our faults and errs, the more lesson we can derive from it. The more we may evolve.

I think the best thing about art is that it has no limit. We can't be 'on top of the game' because the 'game' has no top. Even the 'best' artists out there are students; pupils to other artists who are in turn pupils to other artists, learning from each other. There's always room for improvement, there are always ways to make your work better, there are always new paths and techniques to explore.

For me, the best artists are those who constantly travel outside their comfort zone; not those who are happy with where they are and stay there. There is no end to learning; and in art, that could not be any truer.

Art is just one big adventure, and everyone can sign up. Starting today, let's step off our happy place and join the ride. :)

PS: Vertigo's Lucifer ended in total awesomeness for me last night. Kick-ass.

Yeah, definitely one of the best read ever.

I wish I could read the entire chronicle, but each of The Sandman issue here cost around 120 USD. The only issue I have is The Season of Mists because it's the issue where Lucifer first appeared.

Yes, you should give Lucifer a try. I highly recommend it.

$120?! thats insane. a trade paper back only costs around maybe $18. Actually, Lucifer first appeared in Preludes and Nocturne. Where he was super awesome. You sound like a real Lucifer fan c:

P.S.
how do you do the whole italic thing with one of the words?

Hmm, not particularly a Lucifer fan but I just have this affinity to any story concerning the apocalypse or St. John's revelation. Before Lucifer I used to enlight myself with Dante's Divina Commedia and Milton's Paradise Lost.

Woo, that's a lot of italics. Curious, aren't you? Heheh.

very curious~ mind telling me how you did it? hehehehe

hmm end of the world stories huh. you should try readying on the Sumerian version of the apocalypse and the creation of man. its sorta sci-fi Lovecraftian surprisingly enough.

Just place < i > before the word and then end with < / i >. Leave out the spaces.

Not particularly end of the world as well. You might say I'm curious about the Beginning as much as the End. Sumerian and Jewish myths always have the coolest names. Any recommended particular books for said topic?

try the book of Enoch in the bible. if you can find it that is. It talks about the strange creatures called the Nephylims or however they spell that. and also. search for this word.

Nibiru

and try to piece everything together. If your familiar with that word then you will eventually wind up in how the world was created and how it will end. c:

Do you know I believe the chariots of fire in the bible are actually space ships entering the atmosphere? and most of all I believe that god is an alien. hahahahahaha yes yes I R strange

It's only natural for every curious human being to have their own interpretation of the celestial beyond and whatnots... assumptions people dish out concerning religion rarely surprise me these days. And you're right, Nibiru and other hypothetical planetary objects indeed sound pretty Lovecraft-y.

setujuuu! :D sy termasuk salah satu org yg berpikir gt jg sih. sy tau comfort zone saya di mana cuma saya pikir klo saya terus2an di situ saya ga bakal berkembang makanya saya pengen coba hal2 baru yang saya ga familiar dengannya. siapa tau aja saya nemu comfort zone baru. klo pun ternyata nggak ya gpp, toh sy ga rugi apa2. mungkin bakal lebih terasah klo misalnya saya fokus ke satu hal dan memperdalam itu cuma i find it interesting to try new things. hehe.

I really like your way of thinking,,, and i think i know what you mean,,, i cant say I've had the same experience (you know,, opening an old sketchbook from college... because i haven't even started college! lol...) but i do understand you... and i hope you are right! we all make mistakes, and we have to learn something out of every single one of them,,, i think that because of reading that im going to pay more attention to what i do and how i do it :D thank u!! you are an inspiration for us beginners...

nice thinking....

i do agree, that our old sketches, pictures, is like relics, artefacts from old civilization in archeology..
we could be surprised, like OMG, how could such old drawing existed... LOL LOL
but that is also something that we could learn from, to hone our skills, sharpen our blades, going beyond our past threshold of skills...
provided, as you had said, we go out of our comfort zone, and learn or relearn new things... or else, those 'artefacts' would'nt be just our past, it'd be our present and also our future...

sorry if my words are confusing...
lastly,
"I think the best thing about art is that it has no limit"
i couldn't agree more to it.. i like to assume that art is like the sky.. what is the limit of sky? the sky above and above and beyond... which is... limitless ;)

Too draw-sad thing is the people that don't/can't understand that! Art is life-life is art-you're supposed to learn from both and hopefully not make the SAME mistakes!!!

Nah, I rarely discuss art with other people--I'm used to discover things on my own, through browsing books, the internet, etc. But I guess that mostly depends on the person.
